Drifting through the cold, black water, the fish contracted and expanded his thick cords of muscle, monstrous head weaving side to side as the powerful tail pumped along. The way, even in underwater blackness, shone within his fish memory like moonlit trails traced on the backside of his eyes. He may live for fifty years, and yet his joining along this path was young compared to the hundreds of millions of years marking the history of his kin. Their shadows swam beneath him, burrowed into the fossil record, powdered into inoffensive sand. The whisper of their milt now swirled in his blood, a legacy of anatomical schematics already perfected in an age past.

The fish moved without flaw—engineered that way by nature, by the winds propelling the waves of this lake, by depths untold, by the sense of water flowing from safe shallows. The reeds and rocks felt his passage before he approached. He was a creature incapable of fear, ancient enough to be sure of his strong heart. He drove forward. Small whirls of water spun behind him.
